Feature of the Month: Yarn Source Manila

As millicentmelissa's Facebook page began getting a lot of "likes" this year, I received a nice message from a young lady introducing her online store of crochet yarns. I've become familiar with Yarn Source Manila ever since and liked the variety of crochet yarns Kimmy Maclang (the owner) sells on her site, yarns that have fabulous colors and rich textures which are rarely, if not never, found in local retail stores.

Below are some of the Yarn Source Manila's products:

Acrylic yarns
Multicolored Yarns

Always been a fan of multicolored yarns. They're just so fancy that's why I use most of them in my projects like these dorset buttons and gorgeous crochet earrings and necklaces.

They also have tie-dyed acrylic yarn hanks for knitting or crochet projects. Yarns are soft and would be great for a comfortable sweater or clothing. Price is P360.00 per hank.

Got a new update from Kimmy!

Ever Heard of Yarn Bombing?

Yarn bombed Lion in Bournemouth, England

Lately I've been seeing a lot of contemporary visual artists dabbling in crochet and looking around the web, I saw this new trend going around the globe: Yarn Bombing.

No, it's not the terrorists' new weapon of choice; Yarn Bombing or also called Guerrilla Knitting is a type of street art using knitted or crocheted works instead of spray paint or chalk.

Downtown Toledo was recently hit by yarn bombers as featured in an article by The Toledo Blade:
Guerilla knitters are on the loose in Toledo, dropping bombs on the downtown area in the form of crocheted cozies.
The woolly street art is popping up on signs and parking meter posts, trees, hand rails, and other public spaces throughout the city. The culprits, known as guerilla knitters or artistic vandals, see their work as a kinder, gentler form of graffiti.
It's called yarn bombing, and it takes the most matronly crafts -- knitting and crocheting -- and transfers them from the comforts of grandma's rocking chair to the concrete and steel surfaces of urban streets.
Below are some pictures of the fanciest Yarnbombs I found around the web:

Crochet How-To: Matching Crochet Yarn and Hook

http://www.flickr.com/photos/noricum/

Matching your yarn and hook is one of the most important beginner's lesson in crochet. There are two standards in hook sizes, Japanese and International although I am more familiar with the Japanese sizes and I find these hooks more cost-effective being double-ended (2 sizes in one hook!).

I found this very informative blog by snufykin where she lists down crochet hook sizes matching yarn weights. Check the chart here. Thanks to iheartcrochet blog for the link to snufykin.

Converted the chart in that site to text for your easy reference:
